When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for South Bristol
All construction and land use activities regulated under local ordinances and Maine shoreland zoning law (38 MRSA §§ 435-449). Shoreland Zoning regulates all land within 250 feet of great ponds, rivers, coastal wetlands, and tidal waters, and 75 feet of streams.
- Exempt Ordinary maintenance not involving structural change in shoreland or land use districts

- MUBEC adoption discretionary (small population). South Bristol Shoreland Zoning Ordinance 2024 governs shoreland activities. Contact CEO for building standard applied.
- Contractor requirements
- State-licensed electrician for electrical. State-licensed plumber for plumbing (Jonathan Eaton, LPI). No Maine general contractor license.

Application → plan check → issuance → inspection → final

- 02 Download applicable permit application from the town website.
- 03 For projects requiring Planning Board review, contact Rory Craib (Planning Board) at sbristolpb@gmail.com; applications must be submitted prior to scheduled board meeting.
- 04 For plumbing work, contact Plumbing Inspector Jonathan Eaton at (207) 380-1790.
- 05 Complete and submit application with required documents.
- 06 Pay applicable permit fee.
- 07 Permit issued; post at job site.
- 08 Schedule required inspections.
