When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Alna
All structures and work thereon except those under 200 sq ft (though still must comply with ordinance). New construction, additions, structural alterations, and demolition require permits. Shoreland Zoning Ordinance separately governs work in the shoreland zone. Mobile Home and Trailer Ordinance governs mobile homes.

- MUBEC adoption discretionary (very small population). Building Code Ordinance (amended March 25, 2023) governs. Contact CEO for current code standards applied.
- Contractor requirements
- State-licensed electrician for electrical. State-licensed plumber for plumbing. No Maine general contractor license.

Application process
Application → plan check → issuance → inspection → final
- 01 Contact CEO Bill Butler at (207) 446-6541 or ceo.alna.me@gmail.com to determine what permits are required.
- 02 Obtain building permit application from Town Clerk or town website.
- 03 Complete and submit application with required documents; the Building Inspector/CEO has authority to issue permits and may access any lot or building under construction to enforce the Building Code Ordinance.
- 04 Note: Permits will not be issued for any structure or work of less than 200 square feet, but the structure must still comply with all other ordinance provisions.
- 05 Pay permit fee per fee schedule established by the Board of Selectmen (not fixed in ordinance text; contact CEO).
- 06 Permit issued; post at job site.
- 07 Schedule required inspections.
