Permit triggers and exempt work for Bristol
A zoning permit is required for all land development under Bristol's Unified Development Regulations (adopted November 5, 2024), including new construction, additions, accessory structures, change of use, signs, and most exterior alterations. ADU development requires a permit with the ADU checklist.

Application process
Typical processing: Administrative permits typically issued within a few business days of a complete application. DRB projects: allow 25+ days before the meeting plus additional time for decision.
- 01 Contact the Planning and Zoning Administrator at zoning@bristolvt.org or (802) 453-3648 to determine which permits are required.
- 02 Download and complete the applicable form(s): General Zoning Permit (including ADU checklist), Development Review Application, Subdivision and Boundary Line Adjustment Application, or Sign Application.
- 03 Prepare required supporting documents: project description, site plan or sketch, applicable checklists, and applicable fee.
- 04 Submit application with fee to the Planning and Zoning office (in-person during office hours or by appointment).
- 05 If DRB review is required, submit the Development Review Application at least 25 days before the next DRB meeting.
- 06 The Zoning Administrator acts within 30 days on administrative/permitted-use applications. If no action, permit is deemed approved.
- 07 Upon approval, post the permit visibly at the property for the 15-day appeal period before beginning work.
- 08 Upon project completion, apply for Certificate of Compliance ($60 fee). The certificate includes a date-of-inspection field and is signed by the Zoning Administrator.
