When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Strafford
All land development under the 2023 Unified Bylaw. Zoning districts: Land and Forest Conservation, Miller Pond, River Valley Conservation, Village Center, Rural Residential.

- Vermont statute: two-year commencement, three-year substantial completion. Confirm with Administrative Officer.
- Owner-builder
- Property owners may act as general contractor. State trade licenses required for electrical and plumbing work.
- Contractor requirements
- No state general contractor license; electricians and plumbers must be state-licensed.
Application process
Typical processing: 30 days from receipt of a complete application (Vermont statute requirement)
- 01 Review the Strafford Unified Bylaw (2023) to determine if a permit is required. Access from https://www.straffordvt.org/forms-policies-ordinances.
- 02 Download the appropriate permit application from the town website or pick it up at the Town Office.
- 03 Complete the application fully, including site plan/sketch as required.
- 04 All applications must be dropped off at the Town Clerk's office with appropriate fees attached; permits are requested through the Town Clerk during regular business hours.
- 05 Contact Administrative Officer Bonnie Bergeron at bbergeron@straffordvt.org for questions on zoning or development.
- 06 Applications requiring Development Review Board or Planning Commission review will be scheduled for hearings.
- 07 Upon approval, permit is issued. Post before commencing work.
