When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Sunapee
New construction; additions; alterations; demolition; driveway construction/modification; excavation; development within shoreline or wetland setback areas. Building permit packages include a Certificate of Zoning Compliance.
Note: Not published on public website; contact Land Use Office for determination. NH baseline exemptions (ordinary repairs, painting, landscaping) likely apply. Note: Sunapee's location on Lake Sunapee means shoreline and wetland projects involve additional NHDES jurisdiction beyond standard building permit exemptions.

Application → plan check → issuance → inspection → final
- 01 Contact the Land Use Office at (603) 763-2212 ext. 1023 or zoning@town.sunapee.nh.us in the planning stages.
- 02 Determine which permits are required: building permit, certificate of zoning compliance, demolition permit, driveway permit, excavation permit, land disturbance application, site plan review (as applicable).
- 03 Download applicable application forms from the Land Use Permits and Applications page.
- 04 Prepare required documents: site plan or sketch showing proposed building location, construction drawings, NHDES approval if project is near wetlands or Lake Sunapee shoreline.
- 05 Authorized agents (builders, architects, electricians, plumbers, project managers, or legal representatives) may apply on behalf of the property owner.
- 06 Submit completed application with fee to the Land Use Office.
- 07 Application reviewed by Planning, Zoning and Compliance staff.
- 08 Permit issued upon approval; post on job site.
- 09 Schedule inspections as required at each construction phase.
- 10 Final inspection and Certificate of Occupancy.
