When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for New Hampton
Building permits are required in New Hampton. In any case where a building permit is NOT required, all structures must still meet setback distances based on zoning district.

- Completed application form (residential, commercial, or heating)
- Plot plan
- Construction documents as applicable
- Applicable state agency approvals (NHDES septic, driveway, shoreland as needed)
- Building code
- All work shall be in compliance with all applicable State of New Hampshire building and Life Safety codes. Design note: ground snow load at 1,000 feet elevation is 80 pounds per square foot.
- Permit validity
- Permits are valid for 18 months from issuance.
- Contractor requirements
- State-licensed electricians (RSA 319-C) and plumbers (RSA 329-A) required. Heating system permits require NH DOE Energy Code Approval.

Typical processing: Residential up to 30 days; commercial/multi-family up to 60 days
- 01 Download the appropriate application form from https://www.newhamptonnh.gov/buildingpermits: Residential Building Permit Application; Commercial Building Permit Application (multi-family and non-residential projects); Building Permit for Heating Systems Installation.
- 02 Note: For heating system installations, Energy Code Approval through the NH Department of Energy may be required. Contact NH DOE at (603) 271-3670 or energy.nh.gov.
- 03 Note: Asbestos inspection required by NHDES regulations before any demolition work.
- 04 Prepare required documents including plot plan and construction documents per project type.
- 05 Submit completed application with applicable fee (cash or check payable to Town of New Hampton -- credit cards not accepted) to the Selectmen's Office by 4:00 PM on Tuesday.
- 06 The Permitting Assistant reviews the application and makes a recommendation to the Board of Selectmen.
- 07 The Board reviews at the Thursday evening meeting. Approval or denial: Residential: up to 30 days; Non-residential or multi-family (10+ units): up to 60 days.
- 08 Once approved, post permit on site. All work must comply with NH State Building Code and Life Safety codes.
- 09 Certificate of Occupancy (new structures and expansions) or occupancy permit for change of use and substantial improvements (exceeding 50% of appraised value) required before occupancy.
- 10 Inspections required for: septic systems, water supply, electrical systems, heating systems (Fire Department), smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and driveways.
