When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Gilmanton
Building permits are required for ALL structures including (but not limited to) dwellings, garages, sheds, decks, and porches. Prior to a permit being granted, all zoning, codes, and regulations must be met.

- State-licensed electricians (RSA 319-C) and plumbers (RSA 329-A) required. Residential electrical, mechanical, and plumbing permits are $50 each; solar electric permits are $200.
Application process
Typical processing: 3-5 business days for complete applications
- 01 Contact Community Development staff at the town offices (603-267-6700) with preliminary questions about zoning, setbacks, and whether a permit is required.
- 02 Download or obtain the building permit application packet. All new structures (dwellings, garages, sheds, decks, porches, etc.) require a site plan showing the location of the structure on the lot with setback distances from property boundaries.
- 03 Prepare required documents: completed application; site plan (minimum 11x17 inches, to scale, clearly legible) showing structure location and setbacks; building plans (11x17 inches minimum); septic design (if applicable); site engineering (if applicable).
- 04 The application is received through the Community Development Department, verified by Zoning for compliance with all zoning, codes, and regulations, then processed through the Building Department.
- 05 Completed applications are reviewed within 3-5 business days.
- 06 Upon approval, post permit on site and proceed with construction.
- 07 Schedule inspections with a minimum 48 hours advance notice (call 603-794-8267).
