When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Pennsauken Township
Permit required for all construction except ordinary repairs per NJAC 5:23-2.7.
- Exempt Ordinary repairs as defined by NJAC 5:23-2.7 (painting, wallpapering, replacement glass, interior trim, flooring under 25%)
- Exempt Minor work per NJAC 5:23-2.17A (porches, stoops without roof support, interior alterations without structural changes); permit required but work may proceed before issuance
- Exempt Garden sheds 200 sq ft or less, 10 feet or less in height, without utilities
- Exempt Fences 6 feet or less in height (except pool barriers)
- Exempt Temporary structures under 120 sq ft for less than 180 days
Note: Prior approvals from N.J.A.C. 5:23-1.4 entities are mandatory and must be obtained before permit application. Missing a prior approval invalidates the permit application.
- Completed NJ DCA permit application forms (F100 and applicable subcodes)
- Construction prints per township ordinance
- Prior approvals: Pennsauken Township Engineer, Camden County Department of Health, Pennsauken Sewerage Authority, Water Commission
- Contractor registration with NJ Division of Consumer Affairs

- NJ Uniform Construction Code (UCC) per NJAC 5:23
- Permit validity
- 12 months from issue date if work is started; remains in effect as long as work is not halted for 6 months or more.
- Owner-builder
- Owner-builders may perform work on single-family dwellings.
- Contractor requirements
- All contractors must be registered with NJ Division of Consumer Affairs per state law.

Application process
Typical processing: 10-20 business days depending on project complexity and completeness of prior approvals.
- 01 Submit application at Central Permit Office, Municipal Building, 5605 North Crescent Boulevard.
- 02 Complete NJ DCA UCC forms: Form F100 plus applicable subcode forms (F110, F120, F130, F140).
- 03 Obtain prior approvals BEFORE submitting permit application from: Pennsauken Township Engineer, Camden County Department of Health, Pennsauken Sewerage Authority, Merchantville/Pennsauken Water Commission or NJ American Water Company.
- 04 Prepare required construction plans and supporting documentation.
- 05 Submit all documentation and prior approvals to Construction Office.
- 06 Office reviews application for compliance with N.J.A.C. 5:23-1.4 prior approval requirements.
- 07 Pay all permit fees prior to permit issuance.

Plan review fee: 20% of permit fee. Photovoltaic systems: $100-$1,000+ depending on kilowatt capacity. Certificate of Occupancy: $75 standard, $250 for change of use group.
