When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Gloucester Township
A building permit is required for all construction work except ordinary repairs and minor work as defined by NJ UCC.
- Exempt Ordinary repairs and maintenance as defined by NJAC 5:23-2.7
- Exempt Garden sheds 200 sq ft or less, 10 feet or less in height, without utilities
- Exempt Fences 6 feet or less in height (except pool barriers)
- Exempt Minor work per NJAC 5:23-2.17A (porches, stoops without roof support, interior alterations without structural changes)
Note: Minor work may permit work to proceed before permit issuance. Confirm edge cases with Community Development Department before proceeding.
- Completed NJ DCA permit application forms (F100 and applicable subcodes)
- Construction prints: 2 sets for residential, 3 sets for commercial
- Commercial projects: plans must be signed and sealed by NJ licensed architect or engineer
- Contractor registration with NJ Division of Consumer Affairs
- Zoning approval from Gloucester Township Zoning Department
- Prior approvals: Camden County Department of Health (septic/water), Soil Conservation District approval, CCMUA sewer connection permit (for new dwellings)
