Permit triggers and exempt work for Belfast
For all new construction, structural alteration, enlargement, relocation, demolition, and change of use of any building or structure.

Application process
Typical processing: Contact department for current estimate
- 01 Determine permit type required: building, demolition, driveway, electrical, flood hazard, mobile home/storage trailer, septic, sewer connection, shoreland, sign, internal plumbing, short-term rental registry, or planning permits.
- 02 Access the iWorQ portal or download the applicable PDF form from the Permit Forms and Documents page.
- 03 Complete the application; upload supporting documents (site plan, construction drawings, energy compliance documentation where required under MUBEC).
- 04 Submit online via iWorQ or deliver in person to 131 Church Street.
- 05 Staff reviews application; fees determined after review and issued by email.
- 06 Pay permit fee via Maine InforME ePayment system or in person.
- 07 Permit issued; post permit card at job site.
- 08 Schedule required inspections through the iWorQ portal or by calling the department. Note: same-day and weekend inspection requests are not accepted.
- 09 Obtain Certificate of Occupancy upon final inspection approval for applicable projects.
