When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Deer Isle
Most land use in zoned areas requires a permit. Shoreland areas adjacent to ponds, streams, wetlands, and shoreland are zoned and require permits for any development.

Application process
Application → plan check → issuance → inspection → final
- 01 Consult the town's ordinances and tax maps (available at Town Hall or town website) before undertaking any project in zoned areas.
- 02 Contact CEO Judy Jenkins at 207-266-0785 (weekdays) or visit during Wednesday office hours to discuss your project.
- 03 Determine if Planning Board review is required. Most land use in zoned areas requires a Planning Board permit issued by the Board or by the CEO. Planning Board meets fourth Wednesday evenings.
- 04 Obtain application form from Town Hall or drop box in the Treasurer/Tax Collector's office.
- 05 Submit completed application with site plan and construction documentation to the CEO.
- 06 CEO (and Planning Board if required) reviews application.
- 07 Pay fee and receive permit.
- 08 Post permit at job site; schedule required inspections.
