When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Hackettstown
A building permit is required for all construction within the Town of Hackettstown except for work specifically exempted by N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.14.
- Exempt Ordinary maintenance: Painting, flooring, non-structural repairs
- Exempt Sheds: 200 sq ft or less, 10 feet or less in height, no utilities
- Exempt Fences: 6 feet or less (excluding pool barriers)
- Exempt Minor work: As defined by N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.17A

- 12 months from the date of the last inspection per N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.18.
- Owner-builder
- Owner-builders may prepare plans for their own single-family dwelling.
- Contractor requirements
- Contractors must be properly licensed. Plans for commercial and multi-family projects must be prepared by NJ-licensed architect or engineer.

- 03 Obtain Zoning Permit approval before construction permit if applicable.
- 04 Submit completed application with required documentation to Construction Office.
- 05 Pay all fees at time of permit issuance.
- 06 Plan review period: Up to 20 business days for complete applications.
- 07 Schedule and pass required inspections before proceeding to next construction phase.
- 08 Final Certificate of Occupancy issued after all applicable subcode inspections passed.
