When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Arroyo Grande
A permit is required for construction, alteration, demolition, repair, and before commencing that work.
- Exempt Seasonal sale of pumpkins and Christmas trees does not require a building or fire permit per city standard
- Exempt Permanent signs generally require a sign permit and still require building permit compliance for installation
Note: Exemptions are narrow and project-specific. Ancillary uses within an otherwise exempt seasonal sales lot, such as tents, canopies, or fuel storage, may still require permits. Confirm edge cases with the Building Division before starting.

- The city provides an owner-builder program and distinguishes owner-as-worker, owner-as-contractor, and owner-as-employer roles with different legal and financial risks.
