Application process
Typical processing: Up to 30 days for AO review of FBC applications.
- 01 Determine whether your property is within the FBC district boundaries (contact the town office at (802) 635-2611 or consult the FBC maps on townofjohnson.com).
- 02 If within an FBC district: obtain the Form-Based Code Permit Application from https://townofjohnson.com/public-documents/.
- 03 Optional (recommended): Request a pre-application review with the Administrative Officer to better understand requirements before filing.
- 04 Prepare the completed application and pay the application fee.
- 05 Submit the application to the Administrative Officer (John Sutherland) at the town office.
- 06 The Administrative Officer has 30 days to review and contact you with a decision or request additional information.
- 07 If the development plan meets FBC district requirements, the AO issues a permit.
- 08 If the development plan does not meet requirements, the AO may deny the application or request changes. Applicant may appeal a denial.
- 09 Flood plain development: also contact Flood Plain Administrator Scott Meyer as applicable.
- 10 For ALL projects requiring a state building permit (commercial, multi-family), file separately with the DFS.
- 11 For projects outside FBC district boundaries: no local zoning permit is required. Only state DFS permit (if applicable) and any Act 250 permit are required.
