Building permits are required prior to new construction or alterations and for electrical, plumbing, suppression systems, fire alarm systems, or mechanical work.

Owner-builder

The owner or the owner's agent is responsible for securing permits.

Contractor requirements

All subcontractors must be registered with the City of Elyria.

   Review the ePermit informational page and the city worksheet for the specific permit type.

   Prepare the required drawings, site plan, and project details listed in the applicable Elyria permit worksheet.
3. 03
   Submit the request through ePermits or deliver it in person to 131 Court Street, Suite 101.
4. 04
   Pay the application, permit, and any plan review fees shown in the worksheet or fee materials.
5. 05
   Once the permit is issued, post it conspicuously at the site and begin work.
6. 06
   The contractor or agent requests required inspections through the permit system or by contacting the appropriate inspector.
7. 07
   Complete final inspections and approvals before occupancy or use.

Payments are accepted by phone from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. excluding holidays; checks may also be mailed to the department.
