When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Maiden
Maiden zoning permits are required for residential and commercial work categories listed on the town permits page. Catawba County building permits are required for improvements such as new construction, sheds, carports, pools, decks, porches, and trade work.

- Trade applications are submitted separately by tradesmen. Under North Carolina law, general contractors need a state license on projects over $40,000; electrical contractors must be state licensed.

Application process
Application → plan check → issuance → inspection → final
- 01 Confirm whether the parcel is in Maiden's zoning jurisdiction by calling the town with the property address or PIN.
- 02 Obtain the needed Maiden zoning permit. Town public guidance lists zoning permits for new houses, duplexes, multifamily, decks and patios, additions and alterations, carports and garages, storage buildings, pools, new commercial buildings, commercial additions and alterations, storage buildings, and signs.
- 03 After zoning approval, submit the building permit application package to the Catawba County Permit Center, either through the SmartGov portal or through the permit center.
- 04 Include the Catawba County required forms and supporting items such as erosion control paperwork, workers compensation affidavit for projects over $30,000, lien agent appointment for projects over $30,000, and separate trade applications from licensed trades.
- 05 For commercial occupancies and change of use matters, complete the county safety inspection process. Maiden's business-opening guidance says the Fire Marshal and Building Inspector inspect the space, and Maiden then issues the certificate of occupancy.
- 06 Request inspections through SmartGov after permit issuance.
