When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Greene
A building permit is required for all structures, alterations, and demolitions, including new construction, placement of new structures, occupancy changes, electrical alterations, heating systems, gas appliances, structural alterations, and changes to fire- or life-safety features.

- Exempt Non-structural alterations that do not affect safety features
Note: Stamped plans required for most projects except strictly agricultural buildings, residential buildings under 1,500 gross square feet, or alterations costing less than $20,000.

- Designer or contractor details
- Workers' compensation and disability insurance proof or owner exemption form
- Building code
- New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code and Energy Code
- Permit validity
- Good for one year from date of issue.
- Owner-builder
- Workers' compensation law compliance or owner exemption is required.

Application → plan check → issuance → inspection → final
- 01 Use the Greene code-enforcement page to download the building permit application and current fee schedule.
- 02 Submit the application with plans or a sketch showing location, dimensions, setbacks, foundation details, and relevant contractor information.
- 03 Attach workers' compensation and disability insurance proof unless the owner exemption applies.
- 04 Do not start work before permit issuance.
- 05 Call the code office at least 48 hours before inspections, especially before internal work is covered up.
