When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for LaGrange
The city guide states a permit is required to construct, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change occupancy of a building or structure, and to install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert, or replace regulated electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing systems.
- Exempt Non-structural residential repair such as sidewalks and driveways, painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, countertops, and similar finish work
- Exempt Prefabricated swimming pools less than 24 inches deep
- Exempt Swings and other playground equipment
- Exempt Minor residential electrical repair, including replacement of lamps, receptacles, switches, and overcurrent devices in the same location, plus low-voltage work under the guide thresholds
- Exempt Residential plumbing stoppage clearing, leak repairs, and fixture removal and reinstallation that do not require pipe replacement or rearrangement
- Exempt Portable cooling units or replacement of minor mechanical parts that do not alter equipment approval or make equipment unsafe

- City building codes page states that effective January 1, 2026, LaGrange follows the new Georgia mandatory State Minimum Standard Codes, including the 2026 Georgia Amendments to the 2023 NEC and the 2024 IRC, IBC, IFGC, IFC, IMC, IPC, and ISPSC with Georgia amendments as applicable.
- Owner-builder
- The public guide states an owner who currently occupies the home may do the work. The city also publishes a homeowner affidavit.
- Contractor requirements
- The guide states all contractors and subcontractors are required to be licensed by the State of Georgia under O.C.G.A. Title 43. The guide also notes the Georgia residential contractor threshold over $2,500.

- 03 Answer the prerequisite checklist questions and confirm the project address
- 04 Complete the application and upload all required documents before submission
- 05 Submit required affidavits and scope-specific forms, including homeowner, subcontractor, temporary power, and authorized permit agent forms when applicable
- 06 Monitor SagesGov and email for review comments and status updates
- 07 After approval, pay the assessed fees, post the permit on site, and request inspections through SagesGov
