When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Gretna
Gretna's Building Department is responsible for plan review, inspections, tracking, and permitting for all commercial and residential construction inside the city.
Note: Use Florida Building Code exemptions unless separate city zoning review is still required.

- Permit validity
- Permit becomes invalid if an inspection for permanent construction is not requested within 180 days or more than 6 months elapse between inspections.
- Contractor requirements
- Any currently licensed and insured contractor may obtain a building permit in Gretna. The city does not license or register contractors directly but will reciprocate with the Gadsden County Licensing Board. State-licensed trades must provide license, workers' compensation/exemption, and liability insurance.
Application process
Application → plan check → issuance → inspection → final
- 01 Confirm the property is inside Gretna city limits.
- 02 Obtain zoning clearance and site plan review from the City of Gretna Planning and Zoning Department before building review proceeds.
- 03 Submit the completed permit application package to Planning and Zoning.
- 04 Include the required permit checklist items, plans, contractor credentials, flood or site documents where applicable, and Notice of Commencement when required.
- 05 After zoning clearance and building review, pay the applicable city fees and obtain permit issuance.
- 06 Complete required inspections and final approval.
