When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Moorpark
Permits are required for new buildings, additions, renovations, demolitions, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, reroofs, water heaters, signs, fences over 42 inches, and retaining walls over 3 feet. Fence and wall work and minor finishes should still be checked against exemption rules before submitting.
- Exempt Detached accessory structures up to 120 square feet with no electrical wiring
- Exempt Property line fences and garden walls up to 6 feet
- Exempt Retaining walls up to 3 feet with no surcharge
- Exempt Driveways and walkways up to 30 inches above grade
- Exempt Roof repairs or replacements under 25% of roof area once per year with no framing changes
- Exempt Interior cosmetic finish work and limited plumbing, electrical, and mechanical component replacements
Note: Exempt from permit does not exempt the work from zoning, other ordinances, or high fire zone compliance. Some projects still require zoning clearance, business registration, or other municipal approvals.
