When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Olton
Olton adopts the 2018 International Building Code, 2018 International Residential Code, 2018 International Plumbing Code, 2017 National Electrical Code, and 2018 International Property Maintenance Code. Permits expressly required for fences and moving dwellings. Roofing permits required for roofing installations, replacements, and major repairs effective January 1, 2026.

- Permit validity
- Moving-building permits become null and void if not used within 30 calendar days.
- Owner-builder
- Individuals performing roofing installations, replacements, and major repairs need only a roofing permit. Businesses must also register as roofing contractors.
- Contractor requirements
- Effective January 1, 2026, all businesses performing roofing work must register with the City of Olton before work begins, complete the roofing contractor registration form, provide a valid state or local business license, and pay a $50 annual registration fee.

- 01 Contact City Hall before starting work
- 02 Submit the applicable permit application offline
- 03 For fence permits, submit the standard building permit application with a scaled site plan showing streets, lot lines, existing buildings, proposed fence location, setbacks, materials, design, and start/completion dates
- 04 For roofing work, if you are a business, register first as a roofing contractor and then submit the roofing permit application
- 05 Pay the applicable city fee
- 06 Proceed after the city issues the permit and complete any inspections required
