When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Copperas Cove
A permit is required to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, or change occupancy of a building or structure, and for electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing work. Examples include rooms, stairways, wall changes, fences, retaining walls, attic or garage conversions, certain sheds over 20 square feet, major roofing work, decks over 30 inches above grade, and earthwork over 50 cubic yards.

- Owner-builder
- If you have a county homestead exemption you may do work with your own hands on your own single-family home with a permit. If you do not have a homestead exemption and want to do work on your own single-family home, you must register as a contractor. A property owner may not apply on a contractor's behalf for shed or pool placement.
- Contractor requirements
- All contractors working in Copperas Cove must register. Plumbing, electrical, and mechanical contractors are exempt from the local registration fee under state law but still must submit identification and trade-license information.
