When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Orange County
Orange County requires permits for building-code-regulated construction, demolition, relocation, and regulated trade work unless exempt under North Carolina law. County permit pages also direct applicants to use current forms and county review procedures.
- Exempt Qualifying work costing $40,000 or less can be exempt under N.C.G.S. 160D-1110(c) where no load-bearing structural work is involved.
- Exempt Like-kind replacement of windows, doors, exterior siding, and certain porch or deck walking-surface components
- Exempt Like-kind plumbing replacements with no design or capacity change
- Exempt Like-kind electrical fixture and device replacements under the state-law conditions
- Exempt Roof replacement (while work outside that statutory category still requires permit review)
Note: Orange County does not publish a county-specific exempt-work chart on the reviewed building-inspections pages, so permit exemptions default to the North Carolina statute.
