When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Lake George
A building permit is required for all construction within the Village of Lake George. The county building permit sits alongside village zoning and compliance review rather than replacing it.
- Exempt Residential buildings 1,500 square feet or less
- Exempt Alterations costing $20,000 or less that do not affect structural stability or public safety
Note: Exemptions apply only under Education Law exceptions and still require compliance with village zoning, site plan, and shoreline requirements. Confirm with the Village Planning and Zoning Office and Warren County Building Codes office.

Application process
Typical processing: Village review required first; County: minimum 2 weeks after submission
- 01 Start with the Village Planning and Zoning Office for local land-use review.
- 02 Obtain a Certificate of Compliance from the village office (necessary to obtain the county building permit).
- 03 Complete any local village land-use permits or board approvals that apply, such as site plan review, special use permits, excavation, demolition, sign, tent, or similar approvals.
- 04 Submit the Warren County building permit application to the county for the Uniform Code permit.
- 05 Complete county inspections and final approval, plus any village-side closeout items.
