Laconia is the county seat and the only city in Belknap County. It has a full-service Code Enforcement / Building Department that issues building permits, electrical permits, demolition permits, and Certificates of Occupancy. Trade permits (plumbing, driveway, excavation) are issued by the Department of Public Works at (603) 528-6379. Fire-related permits (gas, oil, fire alarm, sprinkler) are issued by the Fire Department at (603) 524-6881. Sign and site development permits are issued by Planning/Zoning at (603) 527-1264.

Application Process

  1. Determine the permit type required (Major Building Permit, Minor Building Permit, Electrical, Demolition, Certificate of Occupancy, etc.) using the permit requirement guide on the Code Enforcement department page.

  6. Processing time: Up to 15 business days.
  7. Pay permit fees online (2.95% + $0.50 per transaction credit card fee applies) or in person.
  8. Schedule required inspections through Code Enforcement.
  9. A Certificate of Occupancy is required before occupancy of new or substantially modified structures.
