When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Bridgeport
A building permit is required for construction of new structures, additions, substantial alterations, and other projects as defined in Chapter 151 of the Bridgeport Code of Ordinances and applicable zoning regulations.
- Exempt Agricultural buildings on farmsteads of 20+ acres producing $1,000+ in farm products per year may be exempt under Neb. Rev. Stat. § 23-114.03 for unincorporated areas; confirm local applicability within city limits with the Building Inspector
Note: The state agricultural building exemption applies primarily to unincorporated areas. Within Bridgeport city limits, confirm whether any equivalent exemption applies with the Building Inspector.
- Completed building permit application form
- Plot plan showing structure location and setbacks
- Construction drawings as required for scope of work
- Zoning verification
- Building code
- Chapter 151 of the Bridgeport Code of Ordinances governs building regulations and adopts a building code by reference in § 151.15. The specific edition(s) of IBC and/or IRC currently adopted were not confirmed due to a 403 error on the American Legal Publishing page. Verify directly with City Hall. Nebraska's minimum baseline is IBC 2018 / IRC 2018. The Nebraska statewide energy code (2018 IECC) applies throughout.
- Owner-builder
- Homeowners may obtain electrical permits for work on their own owner-occupied residences through the NSEB online portal at nebraska.gov/sed/permits/. The homeowner must perform the work themselves; the exemption does not allow hiring an unlicensed person.
- Contractor requirements
- Nebraska Department of Labor registration required for contractors earning $2,000 or more annually from construction work; $25/year fee. The City of Bridgeport may impose additional local contractor registration requirements; confirm with City Hall.
