When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Taylorsville
New residential construction, new commercial or industrial construction, structural additions or alterations, change of use or occupancy, and major structural remodeling.
Note: Confirm all exemptions with Town Hall before proceeding. Downtown commercial projects may be subject to additional design review as Taylorsville is a Mississippi Main Street Community.

- Taylorsville must adopt one of the last three editions of the IBC or IRC as a minimum code per Mississippi law. The statewide baseline is 2021 IBC / 2021 IRC with Mississippi amendments (effective July 1, 2024). Confirm specific adopted edition with Town Hall.
- Contractor requirements

- 05 Obtain MSDH Form 335 septic evaluation from Smith County Health Department (601-782-4472) if not on public sewer.
- 06 Submit completed application, plans, and supporting documentation.
- 07 Pay applicable permit fees.
- 08 Obtain permit and begin construction.
- 09 Schedule required inspections.
- 10 Obtain final inspection approval before occupancy.
