When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Mize
New residential construction, new commercial or industrial construction, structural additions or alterations, change of use or occupancy, and major structural remodeling.
Note: Confirm all exemptions with Town Hall before proceeding. Note the limited operating hours (until 2:30 p.m.) when scheduling.
- Completed building permit application
- Two (2) sets of construction plans: site/plot plan, foundation and footing details, framing details, electrical layout, and elevations (front, side, rear)
- Proof of ownership
- MSDH Form 335 (if not on public sewer)
- Building code
- Mize must adopt one of the last three editions of the IBC or IRC as minimum code per Mississippi law. Statewide baseline: 2021 IBC / 2021 IRC with Mississippi amendments (effective July 1, 2024). Confirm specific adoption with Town Hall.
- Contractor requirements

- 02 Confirm permit requirements for the project.
- 03 Obtain building permit application form.
- 04 Prepare two (2) sets of construction plans.
- 05 Obtain MSDH Form 335 septic evaluation from Smith County Health Department (601-782-4472) if not on public sewer.
- 06 Submit application, plans, and documentation to Town Hall.
- 07 Pay applicable permit fees.
- 08 Obtain permit and begin construction.
- 09 Schedule required inspections.
- 10 Obtain final inspection approval before occupancy.
