When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Dodge Center
Accessory buildings, additions, air conditioning, decks, demolition, doors, electrical work, elevators, fences depending on height, fireplaces, heating units, garage doors, gazebos, manufactured homes, mechanical work, modular homes, moved-in structures, new construction, plumbing, remodeling, sunrooms, swimming pools, temporary buildings, water heaters, water softeners, and windows are all permit types covered by the city.

- Exempt Water tanks supported directly on grade with capacity not exceeding 5,000 gallons and height-to-diameter ratio not more than 2 to 1
- Exempt Sidewalks and driveways not part of an accessible route
- Exempt Decks and platforms not more than 30 inches above adjacent grade and not attached to a structure with frost footings
- Exempt Painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, countertops, and similar finish work
- Exempt Temporary motion picture, television, and theater stage sets and scenery
- Exempt Small above-ground prefabricated pools under the stated size limits
- Exempt Window awnings supported by an exterior wall and projecting no more than 54 inches
- Exempt Movable cases, counters, and partitions not over 5 feet 9 inches high
- Exempt Agricultural buildings as defined in Minnesota Statutes section 16B.60

Application process
Application → plan check → issuance → inspection → final
- 01 Choose the maintenance permit or plan review permit application.
- 02 If doing the work yourself, complete the self-waiver form.
- 03 Include the required escrow deposit and fee.
- 04 For larger valued projects, submit two sets of plans and a site map.
- 05 Mail or drop off the application and payment at City Hall.
- 06 CMS reviews the project, keeps the applicant informed, and the applicant calls CMS to schedule the final inspection.
- 07 The project and inspection must be completed within six months of the permit issue date to recover the escrow deposit.
