When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Charter Township of Bangor
Bangor states that most home improvements require building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and/or zoning permits. Accessory buildings over 200 square feet need a building permit; 200 square feet or less need a zoning permit.

- Bangor states it reviews and inspects for compliance with State/Uniform Building Codes and local ordinances.
- Permit validity
- Building permit becomes null and void if work is not commenced within 180 days or if work is suspended or abandoned for 180 days. Mechanical permit remains valid while work is progressing and inspections are requested and conducted, but is canceled after six months without activity.
- Owner-builder
- Building and mechanical applications include homeowner affidavits allowing owner installation in the home they live in or will occupy, with responsibility to arrange inspections.
- Contractor requirements
- Contractor registration is required, with $15 annual fee and copy of license. Section 23a warning appears on permit applications.

Application process
Application → plan check → issuance → inspection → final
- 01 Confirm permit type through Bangor's Building and Zoning page and related ordinance/guideline links.
- 02 Complete the applicable building, trade, sign, or zoning form and assemble any supporting plans, site plan, floodplain, wetland, driveway, sewer, septic, or variance documentation noted on the application.
- 03 Register the contractor if applicable; Bangor requires contractor registration and a $15 annual fee with a copy of license.
- 04 Submit in person at the township office or apply and pay through the BS&A Online permit portal.
- 05 Township review occurs for code and zoning compliance. Plan review fees apply where required.
- 06 Pay fees and obtain permit.
- 07 Call for inspections through final inspection or certificate of occupancy/final sticker.
