When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Crittenden
The city zoning ordinance says no building or other structure may be erected, moved, added to, or structurally altered without a building permit, and no land use/building activity may proceed without a zoning permit where required.
- Exempt Land used solely for agricultural, farming, dairying, stock raising, or similar purposes is exempt from building permit and certificate of occupancy requirements for agricultural buildings, except setback and floodplain/floodway compliance still apply
- Completed application form
- Approved zoning permit
- Required fee
- Approved development plan or site plan if required
- Plans in duplicate
- Plot plan with building locations, lot dimensions, setbacks, parking/access, and utilities where applicable
- Building code
- City ordinance repeatedly references the building code and Kentucky Revised Statutes. The city is enforcing Kentucky code-based permitting rather than a separately posted local code edition.
- Permit validity
- Zoning permit expires if no building permit is obtained within 90 consecutive calendar days. Building permit expires if work does not begin within 90 consecutive calendar days, and after start expires after 18 months unless extended.
- Owner-builder
- Public forms identify applicant/property owner signatures; ordinance allows filing by applicant with required plans and approvals.
- Contractor requirements
- No separate Crittenden contractor license requirement was publicly posted in the permit materials reviewed. State trade licensing still applies.

Application process
Application → plan check → issuance → inspection → final
- 01 Start with the city's posted forms page and identify whether the request is a Grant County zoning permit, board of adjustments matter, or another city-regulated application.
- 02 Submit a completed zoning permit application in duplicate with the required fee, development plan/site plan if required, or a plot plan showing lot lines, setbacks, building locations, parking/access, and utilities as required by the city zoning ordinance.
- 03 Obtain zoning approval first. The ordinance states no building permit application is complete without an approved zoning permit.
- 04 File the building permit application with the building inspector and designee of the legislative body, with approved zoning permit, fee, and plans in duplicate.
- 05 Receive the permit, complete work, and obtain the certificate of occupancy before use or occupancy.
