When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Lizton
Lizton requires an Improvement Location Permit for new development, dwelling-unit changes, structures over 144 square feet or with a permanent foundation, temporary uses or structures, electrical, plumbing and HVAC work, many pools, additions, changes of use, manufactured homes, parking lots, telecommunication facilities, and exterior construction that alters height. Permit expires if work has not begun within 12 months; Lizton may grant up to two one-year extensions. Work not completed within two years of issuance expires unless extended.

Note: Above-ground pools less than 15 feet in diameter do not require a permit, though they still must comply with the ordinance. Applicants should confirm borderline cases with the Zoning Administrator.

- Class I structure permits are subject to the General Administrative Rules of the State of Indiana, 675 IAC 12; projects must comply with applicable Indiana laws plus Lizton zoning and subdivision ordinances.
- Permit validity
- Permit expires if work has not begun within 12 months. Lizton may grant up to two one-year extensions. Work not completed within two years of issuance expires unless extended.
- Owner-builder
- The Improvement Location Permit application allows owner or contractor filing.
Application process

- 01 Read the permit policy and procedure document for the project type before filing.
- 02 Complete the Improvement Location Permit application or other specific permit form.
- 03 Submit the application with the required supporting information, such as site location map, detailed site plan, use description, sewer access permit if applicable, driveway approval if applicable, and any flood hazard information.
- 04 Pay the fee to the Zoning Administrator or designee at the time the application is submitted.
- 05 The policy states the Zoning Administrator shall approve or disapprove a complete application within 30 days and issue a placard if approved.
- 06 Post the permit in a conspicuous place and coordinate inspections with the Building Inspector.
- 07 Complete required inspections and obtain the Certificate of Occupancy before use or occupancy where applicable.
