City of Canton

Canton requires permits for construction, enlargement, alteration, repair, moving, demolition, or change of occupancy. Work includes electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing system installation, enlargement, alteration, repair, removal, conversion, or replacement. Covered work types include new construction, remodels, commercial interior finishes, basement finishes, additions, larger decks and screened rooms, patio covers, pools, and larger accessory structures.

Note: No public exempt-work list was located. The city publishes a broad permit-required handout and directs applicants to the building department and portal resources.

Owner-builder

Homeowner affidavits are required for owner-builder applications through the portal resources.

Contractor requirements

Georgia contractor licensing rules apply. Contractors, design professionals, and public users must create portal accounts to request inspections.

   Create a user account in the Canton LAMA portal.

   Start the correct permit type and upload plans, affidavits, and other required documents.

   Use the city help documents and printable forms as needed, including the applicable homeowner affidavit and residential plan review verification form.

   City staff reviews the submittal for code compliance and routes it as needed for fire and other disciplines.

   Pay assessed fees in the portal.

   After permit issuance, schedule inspections in LAMA; inspections may also be requested in person if needed.
