When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Montgomery County
The county states a building permit is required before construction begins for any structure in excess of 200 square feet in county jurisdiction.
- Exempt Structures 200 square feet or less, based on the county page stating permits are required for structures in excess of 200 square feet.
- County building permit application; if in a flood-prone area, an elevation certificate and no-rise certificate by a certified engineer. The county also requires flood-prone structures to be elevated at least 2 feet above base flood elevation.
- Building code
- The reviewed county pages cite Section 105 of the Standard Building Codes in the county fee schedule resolution and require compliance with the Montgomery County Floodplain Prevention Ordinance effective December 16, 2025 for flood-prone construction. No consolidated county building-code adoption page was located in the reviewed sources.
- Contractor requirements
- No county-specific contractor licensing summary was located on the reviewed county permit pages. Alabama state and local trade licensing should still be verified before filing.
