Wall Anchor — Fastener Types, Uses, and Replacement

2 min read

A wall anchor is a fastening insert used to secure screws or bolts to drywall, masonry, or other wall surfaces that cannot reliably hold threads by themselves.

What It Is

Wall anchors spread load across a larger area or grip the surrounding material so a screw can support a shelf, mirror, TV bracket, or other mounted item. They are used when there is no wood stud directly behind the mounting point or when the wall material is brittle or hollow.

Types

Common types include plastic expansion anchors for light-duty drywall, self-drilling metal drywall anchors, toggle bolts for hollow walls, and masonry anchors such as Tapcons or sleeve anchors for concrete and brick.

Where It Is Used

Homeowners use wall anchors for bathroom accessories, curtain rods, handrails, shelving, artwork, cabinets, and exterior fixtures mounted to masonry. The correct type depends on the wall material and the weight of the item being supported.

How to Identify One

Look at the fastener and the wall surface. Hollow-wall anchors often leave a plastic or metal insert around the screw, while masonry anchors are paired with predrilled holes in concrete, block, or brick. Loose screws, wall damage, or a fixture pulling away from the wall usually indicate the anchor is undersized or has failed.

Replacement

Replacement means removing the old anchor, repairing the wall if needed, and installing a new anchor sized for the material and load. If the old hole is blown out, move the mounting point or patch the wall before reinstalling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wall Anchor — FAQ

Can I reuse a wall anchor after removing a screw?
Usually no. Plastic anchors and many hollow-wall anchors lose holding strength once they have been expanded or damaged during removal. If the anchor spins, crumbles, or pulls out, replace it with a new one sized for the wall and the load.
What wall anchor should I use for drywall?
For light items, a plastic expansion anchor may be enough. For medium or heavy items, use a metal self-drilling anchor, toggle bolt, or fasten directly into a stud if possible. Always compare the anchor's load rating to the real mounted weight, not just the item weight by itself.
Why does my wall anchor keep spinning?
That usually means the hole is too large or the wall material around it has broken down. Remove the anchor, patch or relocate the hole, and install a new anchor that matches the wall thickness and material.
Can wall anchors hold a TV mount?
Sometimes, but not by themselves in standard drywall. Most TV mounts should be fastened into studs, masonry, or a manufacturer-approved mounting system. Drywall-only anchors are usually not appropriate for the dynamic load of a television.
Do masonry anchors work in drywall?
No. Masonry anchors are designed for concrete, brick, or block and need a correctly sized drilled hole in solid material. In drywall they will not grip properly and can fail quickly.
