UV Light Kit - HVAC Coil UV Installation and Care Guide

2 min read

A UV light kit is an add-on ultraviolet lamp assembly installed in HVAC equipment to limit microbial growth on coils and nearby interior surfaces.

What It Is

A UV light kit typically includes the lamp, ballast or driver, mounting hardware, and wiring components needed to install a germicidal ultraviolet light inside an air handler, furnace cabinet, or evaporator coil section. Its main purpose is to reduce mold and biofilm growth on wet coil surfaces and drain areas.

These kits are not a substitute for filtration or duct cleaning. Their value is usually in keeping the evaporator section cleaner so airflow and drainage are less likely to suffer from biological buildup.

Where It Is Used

UV light kits are used in forced-air HVAC systems, usually mounted near the evaporator coil or above the drain pan area inside the equipment cabinet. They are more common in humid climates and in systems with a history of microbial growth on the indoor coil.

How to Identify One

Look inside the air handler or coil cabinet for a lamp assembly mounted through the metal panel, often with a warning label about ultraviolet exposure. Some systems also have an external sight glass or service indicator showing lamp status.

Replacement

Lamp replacement is a routine maintenance item because UV output declines with age even if the bulb still glows. Full kit replacement is needed when the ballast fails, the mounting assembly deteriorates, or the system was installed poorly and no longer fits the equipment safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

UV Light Kit — FAQ

What does a UV light kit do in an HVAC system?
It shines germicidal UV light on the evaporator area to discourage microbial growth on wet surfaces. It is mainly a coil-cleanliness and maintenance aid, not a whole-house cure-all.
Does a UV light kit clean the air in the whole house?
Not by itself in most standard coil-mounted installations. Most residential kits are aimed at keeping the coil and drain area cleaner rather than providing broad in-duct air sterilization.
How often does a UV light kit bulb need replacement?
Most lamps are replaced on a scheduled interval, often about once a year, because germicidal output drops before the lamp visibly fails. The exact interval depends on the product.
Can I install a UV light kit myself?
It is better handled by an HVAC technician because placement, wiring, equipment access, and UV shielding matter. Poor installation can damage plastic components or create unsafe exposure.
Why is my UV light kit not working?
The lamp may be at end of life, the ballast may have failed, or the wiring and safety interlocks may have a fault. Some units appear lit but have reduced UV output and still need lamp replacement.
