Stair Riser — What It Is, Where Used, and Replacement Guide

1 min read

A stair riser is the vertical face between one stair tread and the next tread above it on a staircase.

What It Is

The riser closes the vertical gap between steps and helps define the height of each step. On closed-riser stairs, it creates the front face under each tread; on open-riser stairs, that element is intentionally omitted or treated differently.

Consistent riser height is one of the most important factors in how safe and comfortable stairs feel to use.

Types

Common types include painted wood risers, hardwood finish risers, tile-faced risers, and open-riser stair designs where there is no full vertical panel. Exterior steps may use concrete, metal, or composite riser materials depending on the assembly.

Where It Is Used

Stair risers are used on interior staircases, porch steps, deck stairs, and basement stairs wherever the stair design uses closed risers. They appear in both structural stairs and finish stair assemblies.

How to Identify One

Look at the vertical face under the front edge of each tread. That upright surface is the riser.

Replacement

Replacement is needed when a riser cracks, splits, loosens, or has water damage or loose finish materials. Because riser height affects stair safety, replacement has to preserve uniform dimensions from top to bottom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stair Riser — FAQ

What is the difference between a tread and a riser?
The tread is the horizontal surface you step on, and the riser is the vertical face between steps. Together they define the shape of the staircase.
Why does one stair feel awkward to use?
A single riser that is taller or shorter than the others can throw off your stride. Even small inconsistencies can increase trip risk.
Can a cracked riser be repaired?
Sometimes, especially if the damage is minor and the stair structure underneath is sound. Badly split or loose risers are often better replaced.
Do all stairs have risers?
No. Open-riser stairs intentionally leave the vertical space open or only partially enclosed. Many traditional residential stairs use closed risers.
