Foot Valve — check valve that keeps pumps primed at home
A foot valve is a bottom-mounted check valve that holds water in a suction line so a pump stays primed and debris is screened out.
What It Is
A foot valve is a check valve installed at the bottom of a suction pipe, usually in a well, cistern, or irrigation intake. It lets water move toward the pump but prevents it from draining back out when the pump stops.
Types
Common versions include brass foot valves, PVC foot valves, spring-loaded designs, and screened inlet assemblies sized for irrigation or shallow-well pumps. Water quality and pump size affect the choice.
Where It Is Used
Foot valves are used on shallow-well jet pumps, lake-draw systems, irrigation pickups, and other suction-lift pumping setups. They are not needed on submersible pumps that push water instead of pulling it.
How to Identify One
The valve is usually out of sight at the bottom of the suction line, but repeated loss of prime is a common clue that it is not sealing. During service it appears as a screened valve body on the intake end of the pipe.
Replacement
Replace the foot valve when the pump loses prime, the valve sticks open, the screen clogs badly, or the body corrodes. Accessing the intake line is often the hardest part.
Frequently Asked Questions
Foot Valve — FAQ
- What does a foot valve do?
- It holds water in a suction line so a pump stays primed and debris is screened out. In a home, that helps the surrounding system work the way it should.
- How can I tell if a foot valve needs attention?
- A pump that loses prime after sitting, frequent dry starts, or reduced intake flow can all point to a bad foot valve. Debris and mineral buildup on the screen are common trouble sources.
- Can I replace a foot valve myself?
- It can be a DIY repair if the suction line is accessible and the system is small. Deep intakes and well piping make the job much more awkward and time-consuming.
- How much does foot valve repair or replacement cost?
- The valve itself is usually not expensive. Labor and access drive the price, especially if the intake line has to be pulled from a well, pond, or buried system.
