Drainage Mat - Wall Drainage and Waterproofing Basics

2 min read

A drainage mat is a dimpled or textured sheet installed against soil-facing surfaces to create a path for water to drain downward instead of pressing directly against the assembly.

What It Is

Drainage mat is a moisture-control and drainage layer, not just a protective sheet. The dimples or formed core create an air gap or flow space so water can move to a footing drain or discharge point while the wall or membrane behind it stays less exposed to constant wet soil.

It is commonly paired with foundation waterproofing, retaining walls, planters, green roofs, and other assemblies where trapped water would increase pressure or prolong dampness. In many systems it also helps protect the waterproofing membrane from backfill damage.

Types

Common types include dimple board for foundation walls, cuspated drainage mats with filter fabric, heavy-duty geocomposite mats for retaining walls, and under-slab drainage products used below concrete or pavers.

Where It Is Used

Drainage mat is used on the exterior side of below-grade foundation walls, behind retaining walls, in plaza deck and planter assemblies, and under some hardscape or roof drainage systems.

How to Identify One

It is usually hidden after installation, but during construction it looks like a roll of plastic sheet with raised dimples or a molded drainage core, sometimes bonded to filter fabric. At exposed top edges near grade, you may see a termination strip or a narrow band of the dimpled material.

Replacement

Replacement is usually part of larger excavation or waterproofing work because the mat sits behind backfill or finish layers. It is replaced when it was crushed, installed backwards, torn during backfill, or omitted in a wall assembly that needs both waterproofing protection and drainage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Drainage Mat — FAQ

Is drainage mat the same as waterproofing?
No. Drainage mat manages water movement and reduces pressure, but it is not the primary waterproofing membrane. Many below-grade walls need both products working together.
Do I need drainage mat on a foundation wall?
Many below-grade wall systems benefit from it, especially where soil stays wet or hydrostatic pressure is a concern. Whether it is necessary depends on the wall design, waterproofing method, and local site conditions.
Can drainage mat be installed without a footing drain?
It can in some assemblies, but it works best when the water it collects has somewhere to go. Without a proper drain path, the mat may reduce direct pressure on the wall but still leave water trapped at the bottom.
What happens if drainage mat is installed backward?
The flow space or filter layer may not work as intended, and the wall can lose much of the drainage benefit. Wrong orientation can also interfere with how the membrane behind it is protected.
