Application Process

  1. For many residential additions, meet with Planning first to confirm preliminary planning compliance.
  2. Prepare and submit a complete package including the building permit application, plan submittal checklist, and plans.
  3. For additions, provide 3 sets of full-size plans plus 2 sets of calculations and other supporting documents at 214 S. C. St. during open counter hours.
  4. Staff screen the submittal for completeness and calculate the plan-check fee before plan review.
  5. The City performs plan review, and final approval comes after required department signatures and fee settlement.
  6. Once the permit is issued, schedule inspections through the permit system.

Typical processing time: 95% of plan checks within 9 weeks; 2-4 weeks for express plan checks; fee approval in 1-2 weeks for residential and minor tenant improvements or 2-3 weeks for new commercial, industrial, and multifamily projects.

General Requirements

Examples of work requiring a permit include reroofing over 40 square feet, water-heater replacement or relocation, room additions, larger attached patio covers, detached accessory structures over 120 square feet, retaining walls 3 feet or higher or lower walls with surcharge, deck work, and similar structural or utility-related work.
