Work That Does NOT Require a Permit

  • Exemptions listed in City’s Work Exempt from Building Permits handout include, among others: detached accessory structures <=120 SF with no MEP; fences <=84 inches; retaining walls <=4 ft; small utility/storage items; painting/finishes; many minor mechanical/electrical/plumbing exceptions; and similar threshold-based items. Electrical minor portable and temporary work; portable heating/appliance and minor plumbing fixes in certain narrow conditions; limited ordinary maintenance items.

Important: Work involving structural, egress, safety systems, rearrangements, or utilities should still be reviewed as permit may still be required.
