When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Ritchie County
A building permit is required for new residential structures, commercial/industrial buildings, garages, sheds, additions, significant remodeling, swimming pools, decks, porches, electrical/plumbing/mechanical/HVAC work, chimneys, wood stoves, and fences taller than 6 feet.
- Exempt Agricultural structures (barns, storage) on farms may qualify for exemption; verify with county.
- Exempt Very small structures (some sheds under specific dimensions) may qualify for exemption; confirm current thresholds with Assessor's Office.
Note: Exempt from building permit does not mean exempt from zoning and other regulatory requirements. Confirm edge cases with the Ritchie County Assessor's Office before proceeding.
