When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Greenbrier County
A building permit is required for new construction, repairs, renovations, alterations, and land development in unincorporated Greenbrier County.
- Exempt State Fire Code does not apply to buildings used primarily for agricultural purposes, including agritourism.
- Exempt State Fire Marshal has limited jurisdiction over one to two family dwellings in unincorporated areas.

Application process
Application → plan check → issuance → inspection → final
- 01 Submit a permit application to the Greenbrier County Planning and Permits Office in person.
- 02 Application will be reviewed for floodplain determination and code compliance.
- 03 If located in floodplain, applicant must provide Elevation Certificate and Dry Flood Proofing Certificate from WV Registered Surveyor or Engineer.
- 04 Building Code Official reviews for code compliance and zoning conformity.
- 05 Permit is issued upon approval.
- 06 Applicant schedules inspections via Cloudpermit or by phone.
