When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Asotin
The City of Asotin has adopted Washington State Building Codes. Permits are required for new residential and commercial construction, additions and structural alterations, decks, porches, and attached structures, accessory buildings (beyond exempt thresholds), re-roofing, window replacement, siding, mechanical work (plumbing, HVAC), and demolition.
- Exempt Minor residential alterations with total valuation not exceeding $1,500 in any 12-month period, provided work does not affect structural components or reduce egress, light, air, or ventilation (electrical, plumbing, and mechanical are not included in this exemption)
- Exempt One-story detached accessory buildings used as tool sheds, storage sheds, playhouses, and similar uses where the projected roof area does not exceed 120 square feet
- Exempt Retaining walls not over 4 feet in height (from footing bottom to top of wall) that do not support a surcharge or impound liquids
- Exempt Painting, floor covering, cabinet installation, and similar interior finish work
- Exempt Fences below the locally specified height threshold
