When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Mecklenburg County
A zoning permit is required before any structure is erected in Mecklenburg County, including farm structures, open carports, prefabricated buildings, additions, swimming pools, accessory buildings, and new dwellings. The Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC) additionally requires building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, gas, and demolition permits before most construction and occupancy-change work.
Note: Contact the Mecklenburg County Building Inspection Office to confirm whether your project requires a permit before starting work. Zoning permits may be required for structures that are exempt from building permits under the USBC.

Application process
Typical processing: Plan review is typically 3 to 5 business days for single-family dwellings. Processing time for commercial and other project types is not publicly posted.
- 01 Secure water and sewage approval first. Obtain either town utility approval, subdivision utility approval, or Mecklenburg County Health Department approval for well and sewage disposal. A building permit application will not be accepted without this prerequisite.
- 02 Obtain a zoning permit. For county parcels, contact Mecklenburg County Zoning. For parcels in Boydton, Chase City, Clarksville, or La Crosse, contact the respective town zoning office.
- 03 Obtain erosion and sediment control approval where required. All single-family home sites require an agreement in lieu of plan; commercial sites require an approved erosion and sediment control plan.
- 04 Assemble the permit application package: completed application form, two complete plan sets, structural and truss details, contractor license copies, Virginia trade certification numbers for electrical/plumbing/HVAC subcontractors, property directions, and project data.
- 05 Submit the complete package to the Mecklenburg County Building Inspection Office with all approved prerequisite permits attached.
- 06 Wait for plan review. Single-family dwellings are typically reviewed within 3 to 5 business days depending on project size and type.
- 07 Receive the permit by mail or arrange pickup by notifying the permit technician at time of submission.
- 08 Post the permit card on the job site, keep one approved plan set on site at all times, and schedule all required inspections with at least 24 hours notice.
