Permit validity
Under the Virginia USBC, a permit application is deemed abandoned if not pursued in good faith within six months. A building permit may be revoked if work does not commence within six months after issuance or if work is suspended or abandoned for six months. The building official may require a three-year completion limit for new detached single-family dwellings, additions to detached single-family dwellings, and residential accessory structures.
Owner-builder
The building permit application requires the applicant to certify either that they are licensed under Title 54.1, Chapter 11 of the Code of Virginia or that they are not subject to licensure under an applicable exemption, consistent with Virginia USBC provisions incorporating Code of Virginia Section 54.1-1111.
