The town Building Official handles all applications for building permits for the alteration or erection of all buildings and structures within town limits. Zoning approval is also required for change of use, new construction, room additions, garages, sheds, signs, and similar work. Virginia Construction Code permit triggers apply locally through the town's administration of the USBC.

Permit validity

For jobs of $25,000 or less, a copy of a current business license from another locality may be accepted. Contractors working inside town limits must purchase a town business license and provide proof of a current valid Virginia contractor's license.
