When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Brownfield
Building permits are required for all work regulated by Brownfield's adopted codes (building, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical work).

- Permit validity
- Contractor registrations expire December 31 annually and must be renewed.
- Owner-builder
- No contractor registration required for homeowner building permits on owner-occupied properties. For owner electrical work, homeowner affidavit required showing residency/ownership. For new-construction owner-builder permits, owner must show bona fide intent to live there.
- Contractor requirements
- Building contractors must obtain proper license and deposit $5,000 bond before engaging in building business. Annual registration fee is $50. Registration can be revoked for failure to maintain bond/insurance, incomplete registration, unpaid fees, or code violations.

- 01 Determine the scope of work and applicable permit type: building, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical.
- 02 If a contractor is pulling the permit, register with the building official and ensure bond, insurance, and licenses are current.
- 03 First-time contractors must complete the contractor form on the city website.
- 04 Complete the posted permit form with project address, owner and contractor information, work description, valuation, and square footage.
- 05 Bring the form to the city inspector at city hall and pay the applicable fee.
- 06 Request inspections during construction with at least 24 hours notice for electrical work.
