When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Big Lake
A building permit is required for most construction within the City of Big Lake. Exceptions include replacing windows, roof, siding, or fence with the same or like materials in most cases.

- The building permit requires contractor name, address, and phone information when a contractor is used.
Application process
Application → plan check → issuance → inspection → final
- 01 Confirm the parcel is inside City of Big Lake limits and contact Code Enforcement to verify the permit type and current submittal expectations.
- 02 Use the city's Code Enforcement page to access the applicable permit form (general building permit, mobile home/moving structure permit, or golf cart permit).
- 03 Complete the form with owner, contractor, site, work description, valuation, and any plan information requested.
- 04 Submit the application and supporting materials directly to Code Enforcement / City Hall. Commercial or industrial work requires a complete set of engineered plans.
- 05 Wait for city review. Code Enforcement determines approval or disapproval and issues permit number if approved.
- 06 Complete required inspections: Code Enforcement inspects framing, rebar, and concrete; Public Works Director handles plumbing; State Fire Marshal handles fire-safety.
- 07 Complete work before permit expires (six months).
