When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Cut and Shoot
Permits are required for new residential and commercial construction, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical work, and for commercial remodels and additions. Note: residential remodels and additions do not currently require a building permit.
- Exempt Residential remodels and additions (do not require permit)
- Exempt Minor repairs and maintenance
- Exempt Interior non-structural work

- Site plan with property and setback information
- Architectural and engineering plans (if applicable)
- Construction specifications
- Proof of property ownership or authorization
- Building code
- ICC 2018 Building Code and ICC 2020 Electrical Code.
- Permit validity
- Permit valid with continuous work progress; extended inactivity may result in expiration.
- Owner-builder
- Owner-builders must comply with all applicable codes and inspection requirements.
- Contractor requirements
- Contractors must hold valid Texas professional licenses as applicable to their trade.
